Theses, or rather statements, serve as the heart of an essay.A thesis is a very crucial element in writing an essay. Without it, you are essentially just saying one thing and leaving yourself open to criticism. If you are going to make any changes at all, it will probably come from that point.For example, if you write an essay about why it is so hard to think of new ideas, it is not as powerful as if you said 'New ideas are hard because people do not think for themselves. Therefore, people are mostly non-creative and this has resulted in them being incapable of coming up with new ideas.' You see, there is a little bit of truth in each of those statements. What makes the statement powerful is the fact that it is true to the person that it is directed towards.The second thing to keep in mind when you are writing an essay is that a str ong thesis statement is not something that you should base everything on. Theses are meant to serve as supporting evidence, not as the main focus of your essay. Remember, an argument or explanation that says 'Because I said so' is not going to make the reader think differently about the topic at hand. It is also important to remember that although an essay is a fact-based essay, there will be times when the facts are not entirely applicable and you may have to use opinion pieces to create the needed context.By creating the foundation of an essay by establishing the thesis statement, you are preparing yourself for more than just an argument. An argument is only effective if it can be supported with supporting information. Your supporting data can be the reasons why something has happened or why it is happening now.For example, if your thesis says that it is difficult to think of new ideas because the current population does not do so, but the next sentence in your essay says 'Since t he country is facing a large influx of immigrants, the people of this country must find ways to relate to their new neighbors.' This would be considered a weak reason to be the root cause of the problem.If you are going to write an essay, a strong thesis statement is going to be the central focus of your work. By going back to our argument example, if you state your opinion in the first paragraph, and then you go into a little bit of supporting data in the middle section, it is perfectly acceptable. However, if you leave your thesis statement, and then go back into a discussion of why the person is afraid of immigrants in the middle of your argument, that is not acceptable.Also, keep in mind that a thesis statement is not a strict rule. There are many instances where the thesis statement is completely unnecessary. However, it is a good idea to have some sort of support for your thesis statement.
